Vol. 191 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase and Development of Mayo Lands.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission considered the propriety of acquiring the lands at Knockadaff, Carrateigue, Ballina, which were recently sold to a non-national; if he is aware that the inhabitants of the area welcome the proposed development of those lands; and if he will state the quality, area and valuation of the lands.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for acquisition of these lands. The property, which comprises some 170 acres of steep and very exposed sandhills—having a Rateable Valuation of only £18 5s., or less than 2/2d. per acre—is not suitable for Land Commission purposes. The place is wind-swept and practically without vegetation.

Whilst I have not reliable information regarding local reaction to user of the lands by the new owner, I am quite prepared to accept the Deputy's statement in the matter.
