Vol. 191 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Transmission Service: Promotion of Tourism.

42.

Messrs. Browne

andMcQuillan asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been drawn to the suggestion in the annual report of Bord Fáilte that the Board would welcome a transmission service which would be sufficiently powerful to help in the promotion of Irish tourism abroad; and whether Radio Éireann will give consideration to the matter.

I have seen the report referred to but what it recommends is not practicable, having regard to the present international wavelengths situation.

Is there any possibility of the Minister making arrangements so that Radio Éireann will be audible to our emigrants?

While we would like to have all our broadcast programmes received extensively abroad——

And at home.

——I would much prefer Radio Éireann to deal with the more immediate problem of giving satisfactory reception in certain parts of our own territory.

There are as many Irish now in Britain as there are at home.
