Vol. 191 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ireland's Accession to G.A.T.T.

4.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach what negotiations have taken place with reference to Ireland's possible accession to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade; what effect such accession will have on the economy of the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I stated in reply to a question in the Dáil on 14th June, our application to become a party to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade has not yet been fully considered by the Contracting Parties and is to be further discussed in September.

Until the matter has been brought to a conclusion, it is not possible to assess the possible effects on our economy of our becoming a party to the GATT.

Is it on the same day as the Commission on the Irish Language will report?
