Vol. 192 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - General Elections: Polling Days as Bank Holidays.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in order to ensure a high percentage vote in general elections and to facilitate voters generally he will declare all days on which general elections are held Bank Holidays.

I have no power to do what is suggested in the question.

I would, however, refer the Deputy to paragraphs 49 to 51 of the Final Report of the Joint Committee on Electoral Law, from which he will see that the Committee considered it unwise to recommend a return to the position, which obtained up to March, 1927, when polling day was a national holiday.
