Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 23 Nov 1961

Vol. 192 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Televising of Oireachtas Proceedings.

47.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange with the Television Authority to have the proceedings of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann televised in the national interest.

The question whether it would be desirable that the proceedings of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann should be televised would appear to be one for examination in the first instance by the Dáil and Seanad. If the Dáil and Seanad decided that such programmes should be permitted, the necessary arrangements could then be made directly with Radio Éireann. I have no function in the matter.

Mr. Donnellan

What would the Minister think they would recommend?

They would want it bilingual.

If there is to be any televising done, I hope it will be during Question Time and not when the House is empty.
