Vol. 192 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Irish Bacon on British Market.

33.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his Department have considered any plans aimed at getting a better price for Irish bacon on the British market; and, if so, whether he will outline such plans.

The Advisory Committee on the Marketing of Agricultural Produce recommended that the export of bacon, in the form of Wiltshire sides and major cuts including the back, should be centralised in a re-organised Pigs and Bacon Commission which would export a steady weekly quantity to a reduced number of agents in Britain. The Pigs and Bacon (Amendment) Act, 1961, was enacted for that purpose and as I stated during the Second Reading on 16th March last the Government agreed that centralisation of such exports should serve to strengthen the organisation of sales in Britain. As I indicated in my reply to a Question by Deputy Clinton on 15th November the Commission is now initiating arrangements to this end.
