Vol. 192 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Cork Areas.

43.

andMr. Burton asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will explain the delay in having rural electrification extended to the Burnfort and Mourneabbey Districts, County Cork; and if he will ensure that this work will be put under way forthwith.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Doonpeter rural area, which includes the Burnfort and Mourneabbey districts, has been considered by the Board from time to time for development under the Rural Electrification Scheme but has not been successful.

The Board are not in a position to say when supply may be extended to the area.

Could the Minister indicate at this stage when it is likely, if it is at all possible, that the whole country will be electrified?

That is a separate question.

The canvass was not successful and did not produce the minimum economic revenue to the Board after providing for the 50 per cent. subsidy from the Central Fund. All I can say is that the canvass may be successful at a later date, but in any event there will be a revision of the whole rural electrification scheme when the Government examine plans in relation to the ending of the main scheme towards the middle of next year.
