Vol. 192 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in Letterkenny.

68.

asked the Minister for Local Government what steps will be taken to relieve flooding of dwellinghouses at Upper Main Street, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, in view of the fact that the Letterkenny Urban District Council and the Donegal County Council have stated that they have no function in the matter even though one of these local authorities was responsible for raising the street level above that of the footpaths and the doorways of the houses in this area.

69.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the drainage facilities for which a subsidy out of taxpayers' money is being paid are sufficient to dispose of sewerage and rainfall from Ard O'Donnell, Kilmacreman Road, Speer's Lane, Letterkenny, without causing flooding at Upper Main Street, Letterkenny.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 68 and 69 together.

The flooding referred to, at Upper Main Street, Letterkenny, was I understand caused by abnormally heavy rainfall. There has been no recent alteration of road levels in the vicinity which might have an effect on the position.

I am advised that the drainage scheme recently completed in Letterkenny, together with the proposed new sewer at Kilmacreman Road, will be adequate to dispose of sewage and normal rainfall from the areas mentioned and that therefore no further steps are considered necessary by the local sanitary authority for flood prevention at Upper Main Street.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
