Vol. 192 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Common Market: Objection to Publication of Economist's Study.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if with reference to a recent report he will state on what grounds the publishing of a study by an eminent economist of the implications of Ireland's Common Market membership was objected to by officials of his Department; and if he will state the Government's attitude to the highly important views expressed in that study.

The article to which the Deputy refers was written by a member of the staff of the Economic Research Institute, a body independent of the Government. I have no function or responsibility in relation to the publications of the Institute or of members of its staff. The views of the Government on the position of Ireland in relation to the European Economic Community have, I think, been adequately set out and explained in the White Paper published last June and in various speeches by the Taoiseach and other members of the Government. If the Deputy would be good enough to indicate, by a further Question or otherwise, any particular point on which he desires clarification, I shall try to provide an answer.
