Vol. 192 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Deposits.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of money on deposit in the Post Office Savings Bank; how this money is utilised; and if with a view to increasing savings he will increase the rate of interest payable on deposits.

The annual Accounts of the Post Office Savings Bank show the amount on deposit at the end of each calendar year and the manner in which the deposits are invested. I would refer the Deputy to the Accounts for the year ended 31st December, 1960, which were presented to both Houses of the Oireachtas on 24th July last, and which show the amount of deposits at the end of 1960 as £101,557,983.

For the reasons stated in my reply of 8th March, 1961, to a previous question on this subject I do not propose to increase the rate of interest payable on deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank.
