Vol. 192 No. 8

Written Answers. - Agricultural Statistics: Tractors, Farm Employees and Averages.

158.

asked the Taoiseach if the agricultural statistics for 1960 (or 1961) reveal the distribution of tractors on farms; and, if so, if he will give details of the tractor distribution in (a) Leinster and (b) Munster under the following or other appropriate heads: (1) farms without tractors, (2) farms having one tractor, and (3) farms having more than one tractor; if he will state the total number of tractors in each province; and, if full details are not readily available, if he will furnish estimates.

At the June, 1960, Agricultural Enumeration the total number of tractors returned as being on agricultural holdings of 1/4 acre or more was 20,929 for the Province of Leinster and 13,580 for the Province of Munster. The corresponding total numbers of agricultural holdings were, respectively, 103,579 and 116,973. An analysis of these totals showing the categories specified at (1), (2) and (3) of the Deputy's Question is not available. On the basis of the records of the farms included in the 1957-58 National Farm Survey and of the totals quoted above it has been possible to prepare crude estimates. In Leinster the number of agricultural holdings with one tractor is probably about 16,000 and the number of agricultural holdings with more than one tractor is probably about 2,200. In Munster the number of agricultural holdings with one tractor is probably about 11,000 and the number of agricultural holdings with more than one tractor is probably about 1,300.

159.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of (a) each county and province and (b) the State for 1960 (or, if details are available, for 1961) (1) the number of permanent farm employees and the percentage of the total in each county and province, and (2) the average acreage of crops and pasture per permanent employee; if he will give corresponding figures for farm tractors; and if he will state the number of farm employees ascertained in the Census of 1961.

The particulars requested in respect of 1960 are as follows:
