Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Sterilisation.

46.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if An Bord Bainne will examine the possibility of the development of the shock treatment of milk sterilisation recently developed in Sweden, and also the Swedish Tetrapak system for aseptic milk filling for long-term storing of milk, so as to provide a possible liquid milk export trade.

The ultra-high-temperature treatment of milk, which is presumably what the Deputy has in mind, has been under continual review in my Department, as has also the Tetrapak system of aseptically filling the milk into paper containers. Even if markets were available it is most unlikely that the development of an export trade in milk packed in these small containers would be an economic proposition in view of their relatively high cost.

The Minister is going to get the matter examined by the Board just the same?

I have stated in my reply——

In the Department, but by the Board?

Naturally, the Board will also take up the running at the point where we leave off.

Fair enough.
