Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farranfore-Valentia Road Grant.

77.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his Department received a resolution from the Kerry County Council which was passed unanimously by the Council that he be requested to make available a grant of 100 per cent. of the cost of improving the road affected by the closing of Farranfore-Valentia branch railway line; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Kerry County Council have already been allocated a 100% grant for a specific road under the scheme of special grants for roads affected by recent railway closings. Having regard to the limited funds available for such grants and the several demands on these funds, a second allocation to the county out of these funds is not possible. This year the council have a special grant of £55,000 for the improvement of tourist roads as well as a Main Road Improvement Grant of £58,000, and it is open to them to consider the claims of the road in question for improvement out of those resources. I have replied on these lines to the resolution from the Council referred to by the Deputy.
