Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amendment of Licensing Laws.

141.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider amending the licensing laws with particular regard to (a) Sunday opening hours, (b) holiday resort exemption during the tourist season, and (c) unfair competition arising from the granting of special facilities to commercial dance halls.

I have not yet completed my review of the operation of the licensing laws. Until I have done so and obtained the decisions of the Government on my recommendations, I shall not be in a position to make any statement in the matter.

How long does the Minister expect it will take him to carry out this review? Most people are desirous that any amendment proposed will be in operation for the summer season.

I can only say to the Deputy I hope to conclude the examination at the earliest possible moment. I have no doubt the Deputy will have a very great deal of sympathy with me in this task. It is a very complicated and complex matter, since there are so many diverse interests and so many different views as to what should be done. I have had to receive a vast number of deputations and generally it is quite a task to review the entire licensing laws in operation. I should like to assure the Deputy, however, that I shall endeavour to have the appropriate decision taken at the earliest possible moment.

Question No. 142 postponed.

The Dáil adjourned at 4.25 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 21st February, 1962.
