Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Solicitors' Apprentices.

138.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if in view of the unfairness of the fact that a solicitor's apprentice must contribute on entering into apprenticeship a sum of £14 to the King's Inns, from which institution he is excluded and can receive no benefit whatsoever, he will introduce without delay legislation to abolish the levy.

Without accepting all the implications in the Deputy's question, I may say that I would not like to interfere with the long-standing right of the Society of King's Inns to these sums without the agreement of that Society.

That is a very substantial piece of loot.

Does the Minister think there is any possibility of getting anyone to give up moneys they have been receiving for a period such as that? Further, would the Minister not agree that the only way in which that could be dealt with is by his having satisfactory discussions with his colleague, the Minister for Finance, to which no doubt he was referring in his remark on the previous question?

I would not be unhopeful that something would emerge.
