Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Benbulben (Sligo) Barytes Mines.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in view of the acute unemployment in the North Sligo and North Leitrim areas he will make urgent representations to the appropriate body for the reopening of the barytes mines at Benbulben, County Sligo; and, if necessary, if he will ask An Foras Tionscal to make available grants for development and reopening of these mines.

I have decided to give a Technical Assistance grant from State funds to the Company operating the barytes mines at Benbulben, County Sligo, towards the cost of a scheme of development which they propose to carry out during the next two years. On completion of the development scheme it is hoped that production of barytes may be resumed.

I am glad my question has had effect.
