Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Facilities for Mayo Fishermen.

98.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will take steps to provide satisfactory landing facilities and marketing facilities for fishermen on the North Mayo coast.

If the Deputy will be good enough to let me have more information about the particular needs he has in mind, I shall be glad to have them examined. I should say, however, that the exposed nature of the coast line of North Mayo makes the provision of satisfactory landing facilities very difficult.

99.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will have work on the reconstruction of the pier at Darby's Point undertaken in the near future so as to facilitate fishermen from Achill.

As I stated in reply to the Deputy on 23rd November, 1961, a useful jetty at Darby's Point would be quite costly. I am not satisfied that a case exists at present for incurring such expenditure but the matter is being kept under review. A pier at Purteen was improved some years ago at considerable cost and is available to Achill fishermen.

Questions Nos. 100 and 101 postponed.
