Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mountmellick Vocational School.

107.

asked the Minister for Education what is the position in relation to the proposed new vocational school for Mountmellick which he has already sanctioned in principle; and what his Department propose to do with a view to speeding up its erection.

Sanction was given on 2nd December, 1961, to the County Laois Vocational Education Committee for the purchase of a site for the proposed new school at Mountmellick. I understand that the legal formalities in connection with the purchase are being attended to by the Committee's solicitor.

The question of expediting the arrangements for the erection of the new school is one, in the first instance, for the Committee concerned. As the Deputy is aware, the Committee decided in February, 1961, that projects for the extension of the existing schools at Portlaoise and Portarlington, and for the provision of new school buildings at Abbeyleix and at Newtown, would take precedence over the Mountmellick school project.
