Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Law Reform Proposals.

53.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Lands whether any proposals of law reform are contemplated by him in relation to the work of his Department; and, if so, the nature of such proposals, and the probable date when legislation implementing them will be introduced.

As far as my Department is concerned, the only such proposals contemplated relate to the amendment of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959. These proposals, which represent a further stage in the long-term process of comprehensive revision of the fishery laws, include the following aspects which may be regarded as coming within the description of law reform, viz. a general revision of penalties for fishery offences, including substantial increase in those relating to poisoning and pollution; revision of the procedure for applying conservation measures; revision of the procedure for election to Boards of Conservators; and extension of certain powers of search, seizure and forfeiture in relation to fishery offences.

It is hoped to introduce this amending legislation within the present session.
