Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Meath Forestry Plantations.

72.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will consider taking on some of the local unemployed in the developing of Langan's plantations at Kilwarden-Kinnegad, County Meath, and other plantations in the area.

73.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Forestry Section of his Department could arrange to employ additional persons on development work on the recently acquired Langan lands (Kilwarden Estate) at Kinnegad in order to relieve local unemployment.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 72 and 73 together.

The Forestry Division of my Department has a staff of eight men at present employed at Kilwarden. This number is sufficient to carry out the programme of work being undertaken there.

Is the Minister aware that because of the amount of unemployment in this area during the winter, there is dissatisfaction that no further people are being taken on for forestry work ?

I understand eight experienced forestry workers are deemed to be sufficient for the programme being carried out there at the moment.
