Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Private Telephone Rental and Call Charges.

89.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he intends to increase the charge for private telephone calls; and if he intends to increase the rental charge for private telephones.

The current round of Civil Service pay awards will raise my Department's staff costs by approximately £1,000,000 a year. Portion of this increase can be offset by normal growth of traffic which will produce extra revenue without a corresponding increase in expenditure but that, of itself, will not be sufficient to maintain the Department's services in a solvent position. I am at present considering what Post Office charges should be increased but have not yet reached a decision which would enable me to give a categorical reply to the Deputy's question.
