Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Fíor-Ghaeltacht Areas.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons on the unemployed register in each of the areas recognised as Fíor-Ghaeltacht in July, 1926, July, 1936, July, 1946, July, 1956, and at the latest date for which such information is available.

The particulars requested by the Deputy of persons on the live register in areas recognised as Fíor-Ghaeltacht are not available. Statistics of persons on the live register are normally compiled in respect of Local Offices of the Department of Social Welfare and it is not possible to relate the areas covered by these offices with these defined as Gaeltacht areas. A return has, however, been compiled in respect of the month of January in certain years showing the number of men residing in each district electoral division who had claims to unemployment benefit and applications for unemployment assistance current at a specified date in that month. The figures exclude those who were discharged from, or due to start work on Employment Schemes in the preceding week. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing for a date in January, 1956 and 1962 the total number thus returned for the total of district electoral divisions listed in the Gaeltacht Areas Order, 1956, for each county.

In certain cases only parts of these District Electoral Divisions are included in the Gaeltacht Areas, but in compiling the figures of unemployment the complete district electoral divisions are included. Similar particulars for 1926, 1936 and 1946 are not available.

Following is the statement:—

TOTAL number of men (a) who had claims to Unemployment Benefit or applications for Unemployment Assistance current at a date in January in each of the years 1956 and 1962 in the total of the District Electoral Divisions (b) in each County listed in the Gaeltacht Areas Order, 1956.
