Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Laois Bogs.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when Bord na Móna propose to develop the bogs at Derrycunningham and Monettia, convenient to Killeigh, and Rosenallis, County Laois; and if work is likely to commence on this bog during the coming season in order to provide much-needed local employment.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that they have no plans for the early development of these bogs, which are known in the Board's records as Monettia bog.

Is the Minister aware that it is at least six years since Bord na Móna first pegged out these bogs for development? Has he any information as to what Bord na Móna have in mind in relation to the bogs they have already taken over? It is a huge stretch.

Bord na Móna undertook a very elaborate survey of a very wide area, the development of which will take place over a very considerable period. The fact that they surveyed a particular area does not necessarily mean that the area will be developed shortly after the survey.

But eventually it will be developed?

I believe that is the eventual intention.
