Vol. 193 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Defence.

56.

asked the Minister for Defence the amount of money so far expended by his Department on civil defence.

There is a Civil Defence subhead in the Vote for Defence and the expenditure charged to that subhead during the period from 1 Aibrean, 1951, to 28 Feabhra, 1962 was £342,978.

This figure does not include certain categories of expenditure on civil defence charged to other subheads of the Vote, mainly in respect of staff employed on civil defence and work carried out by the Army in connection with civil defence.

These categories of expenditure are not separately recorded in my Department and it would take an inordinate amount of time and labour to abstract the information from the records. It is estimated, however, that this expenditure was of the order of £300,000.

57.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of active members of civil defence in the country.

The total number of active members in the civil defence services on 30 Samhain, 1961, as shown in returns furnished to me by the local authorities, was 7,702.

58.

asked the Minister for Defence the total cost up to the present of uniforms provided for civil defence personnel.

The total cost of uniforms provided for the civil defence organisation up to the present is £32,787. This includes uniforms purchased by local authorities for members of civil defence on a grant aided basis and the stocks held by my Department.

59.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of persons who joined civil defence in each year since its inception.

Recruiting for the civil defence services commenced in Feabhra, 1957. The returns furnished to me by the local authorities on 30 Samhain, 1957, indicated that there was an initial intake of 2,884 volunteers.

The number of persons who joined the civil defence services as at 30 Samhain in each year since the inception of the services as shown in returns furnished to me by local authorities, is as follows:—

asked the Minister for Defence the number of each rank of Army personnel at present engaged in civil defence recruitment and administration.

The number of Army officers at present engaged on duties relating to the organisation of civil defence is 10.

Two of these officers—a lefteanant chornal and a ceannfort—are attached to the staff of An Brainse Cosanta Sibhialta of my Department.

Eight officers of the rank of ceannfort have been assigned to full-time duties as Regional Civil Defence Officers, one to each group of counties comprising a civil defence region. The duties of these officers include the provision of advice and assistance to local authorities in the development of civil defence locally.
