Vol. 193 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Estates Limited.

35.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he was aware of the charges made against the operation of Irish Estates Limited and decided that there were no grounds for an investigation.

The answer is no. My powers to investigate a matter of this kind are limited to those conferred by Section 109 of the Companies (Consolidation) Act, 1908. As soon as I received a request for the appointment of an inspector under that section I acceded to it.

May I ask whether it will be solely officers of the Minister's Department who will carry out the enquiry?

An officer of my Department will not carry out the enquiry.

Would the Minister then say who will carry out the enquiry?

The person or persons who will carry out the enquiry have not yet been appointed but I can assure the Deputy he need have no qualms as to the capacity, independence or the impartiality of the person or persons appointed to do so.

Will the findings of the enquiry be made available to Deputies?

I do not know exactly what the procedure is but if the practice has been to publish, it will be published.
