asked the Minister for Health the number of deaths in this country from lung cancer for each of the past five years.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

In 1957, the number of deaths from cancer other than lung cancer was 4,213 and the number of deaths from lung cancer was 606.

In 1958, the respective figures were 4,118 and 564.

In 1959, they were 4,176 and 601.

In 1960, they were 4,113 and 648.

Final figures for 1961 are not yet available, but the provisional figures, which, I understand, can be taken as substantially correct, were 4,003 and 680 respectively.

Cancer of the lung has been taken, in accordance with normal usage, as including cancer of the bronchus, trachea, lung, larynx, mediastinum and thoracic organs.
