Vol. 193 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rosslare-Wexford Road.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make a special road grant available for the improvement of the Rosslare-Wexford road, as this road is freely used by visitors who enter this country with motor cars through the Rosslare Harbour-Fishguard route in the tourist season.

I am not in a position to allocate a special grant for the road in question, but the council may undertake any necessary improvements on it out of the ordinary grants which include a main road improvement grant of £42,200.

Does the Minister realise the particular importance of this road, in view of the motor traffic coming through Rosslare Harbour during the tourist season?

While what the Deputy says in relation to cross-Channel traffic and the carrying of cars during the tourist season is true, the overall volume of traffic on this road is not quite so extraordinary. It is not so extraordinary as to merit a special case being made for a special grant to look after it.

When the Minister talks about traffic is it evidence he has from the county council or from his own officials in Dublin?

I suppose it would be fair to say I probably have a little of both. They may not correspond.

Has the Minister made up his mind in this case he will not give assistance? Will he not keep an open mind on it until he has received a deputation from the Deputies for the constituency?

It is only fair to say that Deputy Corish has approached me on this matter in the recent past. If the Deputies feel there is something they can add to the information, well and good.

The Minister has no objection to receiving a deputation?

No. If they have anything further to add, I have no objection.
