Vol. 194 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drive-On Cross-Channel Ferry Service.

10.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what progress has been made up to the present in the consultations between his Department and Bord Fáilte about the establishment of a drive-on caravan ferry service between this country and Britain; and whether such a service is to be introduced.

In conjunction with Bord Fáilte, I am pursuing vigorously with the shipping interests concerned the question of providing a passenger/ car ferry service. Such a service would also provide for carriage of caravans. I am not at present in a position to say when such a ferry service may be introduced.

Could the Minister say which port that ferry service would operate through?

I am unable to say that.

Would the Minister take Rosslare Harbour into consideration?

It depends on the decision of the shipping companies concerned and the shortest route is generally the one taken.
