Vol. 194 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxing of Motor Vehicles.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that persons taxing vehicles for quarterly or half-yearly periods are forced to pay twenty per cent. extra; and if he will take steps to have this injustice rectified.

I am aware that the surcharge on a quarterly licence for a mechanically propelled vehicle is 5 per cent. of the duty leviable on an annual licence; if therefore, four quarterly licences are taken out in respect of a particular vehicle in a licensing year the total surcharge amounts to 20 per cent. Half-yearly licences may be taken out only for the second half of a licensing year and there is no surcharge on such licences.

I am having the question of quarterly and part-annual licences fully examined with a view to determining what, if any, revisions might be desirable in the existing system.
