13.

asked the Minister for Health when he expects to receive and to publish the Registrar General's returns of births, deaths, etc. and population covering the period April 1961-1962.

Since the coming into operation of Section 2 of the Vital Statistics and Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, 1952, vital statistics have been compiled by the Central Statistics Office on behalf of the Minister for Health. The Central Statistics Office compiles, weekly, quarterly and annual reports on vital statistics.

The weekly reports give information as to the number of births and deaths registered in the 14 largest towns and cities in the State and also certain information as to the numbers of deaths from infectious diseases registered in these centres.

The quarterly reports are published in respect of the quarters ending 31st March, 30th June, 30th September and 31st December. Each report for the December quarter gives a summary of the important vital statistics in respect of the year. The quarterly report for the quarter ended 31st December, 1961, is at present in hands of the printers and it is expected that it will be published within the next couple of weeks. The quarterly report for the March quater 1962 will be available in June next.

The Annual Report on Vital Statistics for the year 1961 which consists mainly of a breakdown and analysis of the vital Statistics already published in the quarterly reports is expected to be published before the end of this year.
