Vol. 194 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Survey of North Cork Coalfield.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the report on the prospecting survey carried out in the North Cork coalfield during the years 1958 to 1961 is now available; and if he will state the conclusions arrived at as a result of this survey.

Details of an extensive prospecting programme carried out by a private company in the North Cork coalfield during the years 1958 to 1961 are set out fully in a 78-page report which was prepared by the company's engineer in charge of the prospecting. This report is lodged at the office of the Geological Survey where it is available for inspection by any interested person.

The report states the engineer's conclusion that the exploration programme had established that the coalfield was a poor mining proposition, suitable only for shallow small-scale mining.
