Vol. 194 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. Stephen's Green Bus Stops.

96.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that certain bus stops in the vicinity of Saint Stephen's Green, Dublin, necessitate certain buses pulling into the left at the stop near a corner to the right on the bus route; and if he will advise C.I.E. that the buses concerned cause considerable obstruction to the free flow of traffic owing to necessary crossing of traffic lines by them in order to make the right hand turn.

Under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, is the statutory authority for deciding where bus-stops may be located. In practice, however, the Commissioner's powers are exercised only after full consultation with C.I.E. and while he is, of course, fully alive to problems such as those referred to in the Question he must also take account of the need to cater for the reasonable needs of all those who use the buses, even if this means some interference with the smooth flow of other traffic. It is usually a question of accepting a compromise, especially in the central city area.

I have, however, brought the Deputy's Question to the notice of the Commissioner for such consideration, in consultation with C.I.E., as may be possible.
