Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Police Protection of Property in Dublin.

76.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the fact that incidents on the Border, which caused a considerable number of Gardaí to be drafted into that area, have now ceased he will request the Commissioner of the Gardaí to have some of those men drafted back to Dublin where they are very badly needed to protect people's property from the smash-and-grab raiders in the city and more particularly in the suburbs.

The strength of the Force in the Dublin Metropolitan Division is the subject of frequent examination with a view to maintaining it at a level adequate for all police purposes. The present strength, which has been increased by about 200 Gardaí in the past four years, is 1,779 and the Commissioner has informed me that this number is considered sufficient to meet existing needs.
