Vol. 194 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Irish Language.

4.

asked the Taoiseach what effective action he proposes to take to ensure that henceforth citizens will in no instance whatever, anywhere within the confines of the State, be hampered, handicapped and obstructed by public officials when they desire to use the national language, whether such officials be Gardaí Síochána, local government employees, civil servants in general, representatives of the Attorney-General, or persons in the employment of State-sponsored companies.

I do not accept the implication in the question.

The policy of the Government is to continue to seek the achievement of the national aim of restoring the Irish language, by encouraging its use as a vernacular language.

This policy is well known to all public officials and to the employees of State-sponsored bodies.

Failure by individuals to comply with the instructions or directives that are operative in the matter render the person concerned liable to appropriate disciplinary action. The number of complaints received is small, and I do not consider that any special action is called for.

B'fhéider nach bhfuil sé i ndán é a dhéanamh.

Cuireadh i mBéarla é.

B'fheidir nach bhfuil sé í ndán é a dhéanamh.
