asked the Minister for Education the number of national schools throughout the country with more than three teachers in September 1924, September 1929, September 1939, September 1949, September 1959 and September 1961; and in each case how many of these schools had lay principals.

The statistics available in my Department for the year 1949 and for earlier years are not in such form as would enable me to give the information requested by the Deputy for those years. The statistics available for the school years ended 30th June, 1959, and 30th June, 1961, only give (a) the number of capitation schools (where the principal teachers are members of religious communities) and (b) the number of classification schools (where the majority of principals are lay teachers). With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a table giving for those two years the number of capitation and classification schools with four or more teachers.
