Vol. 195 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Policy on Partition.

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether his intention has been drawn to a statement made by Deputy Robert Briscoe in Los Angeles on 24th April that this country would definitely grant military bases to the United States in return for the freedom of Northern Ireland, and that Britain might be offered a couple of hundred billion more for Northern Ireland's freedom and then everybody would be happy; and whether Deputy Briscoe's statements in this regard represent the considered policy of the Government.

4.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether the proposal that Ireland would in return for the liberation of the six north eastern counties agree to allow military, naval or rocket bases within the national territory under NATO or other similar control represents the Government's position in this matter.

5.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether the proposal that, for a sum of money paid to Britain by America, Ireland could achieve the reintegration of the national territory represents the Government's position in this matter.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 3, 4 and 5 together.

I have seen the newspaper reports to which the Questions refer. No proposals of the kind mentioned have been considered by the Government.

In view of the fact that Deputy Briscoe is a member of this House and a prominent member of the Fianna Fáil Party, as well as being Lord Mayor of the principal city, would the Taoiseach not take steps to deny what Deputy Briscoe said in Los Angeles?

That is what I have done.

Would the Taoiseach not have him put under restraint?

He is supposed to be bringing home factories but he is selling Israeli bonds.
