Vol. 195 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Rearing: Zoning System.

49.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will explore the feasibility of introducing into Irish agriculture a zoning system, such as that in operation in Holland with regard to certain farm produce, in the traditional sheep-rearing counties of Galway and Roscommon, which at one time produced one-third of the country's sheep population.

I do not consider that a zoning system to develop the production of sheep only in areas such as those mentioned would be practicable or in the national interest. My Department's sheep breeding programmes envisage the encouragement of developing sheep breeds and crosses and patterns of sheep production suitable to the physical conditions and farming economy of the different areas of the country mainly concerned.
