Vol. 195 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Entry Age.

32.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the opinion of the Council of Education that twelve years is the optimum age for entry into a secondary school, and that, owing to the entry of many pupils at a later age the curriculum in languages and science has to be limited, he will investigate the possibility of providing some means of encouraging, by financial aid or otherwise, the entry of children into secondary schools at twelve years of age.

This will be a matter for examination in connection with the consideration of the Council of Education's report and in the light of the views thereon which will be received from the various educational bodies.

I may mention, however, that this year I have had a census taken of the various age-groups attending full-time at school at the age of 12 and beyond.
