Vol. 195 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Letter Address System.

16.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that in cases where Lifford is put in the address of letters, in order to comply with the new postal regulations, the letters still go to (or via) Donegal town; and, if so, what steps are to be taken in the matter.

17.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the inconvenience caused by enforcing the new postal address regulations under which, for instance, a farmer in Malin (45 miles from Lifford, County Donegal) who ordered farm requirements from Dublin discovered after a considerable time that the order had been dispatched 23 days previously and was at Lifford station awaiting collection; and, if so, what action he proposes to take to avoid cases of this nature.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

The number of instances where fully-addressed letters for the Lifford postal area are miscirculated to Donegal Post Office is very small and represents only about 1 per 10,000 items delivered in that postal area. The Department has always striven to attain 100 per cent. accuracy in sorting and will continue to do so.

I have, of course, no responsibility for the dispatch of goods by rail and I have no direct knowledge of the incident referred to involving an order for farm-requirements. From inquiries made of the railway companies it appears that recently goods ordered by a person in the vicinity of Malin were misconsigned but that the mistake is not attributable to the postal address system.
