Vol. 195 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Costs of Postal Traffic.

50.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the difference in the cost of having equal volumes of postal traffic done at class VI offices and at scale payment sub-post offices.

I am unable to give the information requested. It is not possible to separate payments for postal traffic from the other elements in the remuneration of subpostmasters, and, moreover, the rate of payment varies widely from sub-office to sub-office according to the total volume of post office business transacted.

Is it not a fact that the comparison with the amount of pay of the subpostmasters and postmistresses in rural Ireland is in the ratio of four to one?

This has nothing to do with the volume of traffic.

The Deputy seems to know. I do not know why he wants an answer.

I have asked the Minister one supplementary question arising out of my question, to which I expect a reply.

The Minister appears to be asking me the question, instead of I asking him. I have asked him is it not a fact that there is a four to one ratio?

I am unable to answer the question.

The Minister should be able to answer it. I shall repeat the question tomorrow to give the Minister an opportunity of answering it.
