Vol. 195 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Licensing Laws: Views of Bishops of Ireland.

55.

asked the Minister for Justice if at any time in recent years representations were made by the Bishops of Ireland expressing their opinion on the licensing laws; and if he will give the date on which such representations were received by the Government.

Any such representations, if received, would of course be regarded as confidential communications.

May I ask if it is a fact that representations were made within the past month by the Bishops in connection with the licensing laws?

I have indicated that if any such representations were received, the fact that they were received and their contents would be regarded as confidential.

May I ask the Minister if it is not a fact that as a result of having received such representations from the Bishops, the Government have now decided to drop Section 15 of the Intoxicating Liquor Bill? They got the wind up, and rightly so.

Not at all. It was Fine Gael made them.
