Vol. 195 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Migration from Sligo-Leitrim.

40.

andMr. McLaughlin asked the Minister for Lands the number of applications received by his Department from persons anxious to migrate from the Sligo-Leitrim constituency; the total number of applications dealt with in the last five years; and the number of applications it is proposed to deal with in the next 12 months.

Land Commission records are not kept by reference to constituency areas.

During the 5-year period ended 31st March, 1962, applications for migration were received from 46 tenants in County Sligo and 184 tenants in County Leitrim. In the same period, one tenant from County Sligo and nine tenants from County Leitrim were transferred to new holdings in other counties while one tenant from County Sligo and four tenants from County Leitrim were resettled on new holdings within their own counties.

It will be appreciated that such arrangements for migration as are in train for the current year are still tentative. Final decisions regarding migration each year depend on a number of factors, including the circumstances of the various applicants, the suitability of their lands for use in effecting rearrangement and the number of new holdings available for disposal. Already this year two tenants have been migrated from County Leitrim to the midlands. Further migrations from Counties Sligo and Leitrim will be effected according as circumstances permit.
