Vol. 195 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Shannon Bridge.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the dangerous condition in regard to heavy transport of the bridge across the Shannon at Shannonbridge; and what steps he has taken to have a new bridge provided.

I understand that an engineering inspection on 11th ultimo revealed that the bridge has become dangerous. A request from the Offaly County Council for the erection of a temporary Bailey bridge was received in my Department on 17th ultimo and has been referred to the Commissioners of Public Works for their attention. My Department advised the Offaly County Council on 31st ultimo that consideration should be given to having a further detailed examination of the bridge carried out and a report and recommendation submitted to the council on the steps to be taken to deal with it. The council were also advised that since the bridge connects the counties of Offaly and Roscommon, the Roscommon County Council might be consulted in the matter having regard to the provisions of Part IV. of the Local Government Act, 1946.
