Vol. 195 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Survey of Archaeological Work.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance whether any annual survery is published by his Department of the archaeological work carried out by the Office of Public Works during each year; and, if not, whether he will consider having such an annual survey published.

Although the Office of Public Works occasionally carries out an archaeological excavation when incidental to conservation works at a national monument, such excavations are not part of their normal activities. Archaeological excavations for which assistance is given from the Vote for Employment and Emergency Schemes are sponsored by the Royal Irish Academy and are carried out under statutory licences issued under the National Monuments Acts. It is a condition of the licences that reports must be made to the National Museum. Usually accounts of the work are published in the learned journals. In the circumstances, publication of an annual survey is not considered necessary.
