Vol. 195 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Station Room Charge.

45.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that a Garda widower who has his own house is charged £1 per week towards the cost of a room in the Garda station because his children have reached a certain age; and if he will take steps to rectify this practice.

In 1961, the non-pensionable rent allowance formerly paid as a separate item to Gardaí, including widowers, for whom official quarters are not available, was incorporated in pay and became a pensionable emolument. At the same time a provision was introduced for the deduction of £1 a week from the pay of members, including widowers, for whom official quarters are available.

If the Deputy has any particular case of a widower in mind and would let me have the details, I will look into it and see whether the circumstances of the case are such as would warrant the waiving of deductions.
