Vol. 195 No. 16

Personal Explanation by Member.

Deputy Dr. Browne has given notice that he wishes to raise a personal matter.

At Column 1601, Volume 195, No. 12, Deputy Sweetman is reported as making the serious charge that I was "a Red", implying that either I am or at some time was a Communist. This damaging and untrue charge was circulated widely by at least one of the national newspapers. I want to state simply that I am not now and at no time have been a Communist, as member of the Communist Party or associated with the Communist Party.

In the light of these facts, the charge is false. It should not have been made and, having been made, in the light of what I have said, should be withdrawn.
