Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raising of Legal Marriage Age.

1.

asked the Minister for Health if he has yet received a memorandum from the Irish Housewives Association dealing, among other matters, with the raising of the legal marriage age; whether he has completed his consideration of the desirability of raising the present marriage age; and whether he will now take any action in the matter.

I have not received a memorandum as mentioned in the question, but, as I have already mentioned in reply to previous questions, I have had the matter under consideration following representations received from a number of bodies.

Legislation would be necessary to raise the legal marriage age and, if legislation is introduced, it should cover, also, certain other matters. Examination of these matters is proceeding. I hope to be in a position in the near future to arrange for discussions with the various religious authorities and any other interests involved.
