Vol. 196 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Access to Laytown (Meath) Strand.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider making a grant available to construct a path from Shangri-La gate to Devin's point at Laytown, County Meath in order to protect the wall erected by the Office of Public Works and to restore easy access to the back strand.

I regret that there are no funds from which I could make a grant for this work.

I should be glad to know if the Parliamentary Secretary is aware of the peculiar position that has arisen because of the fact that the Board of Works have erected a wall there. Because of that, the Meath County Council cannot take over this portion of the strand and make easy access to the back strand. That is the best portion of the strand but it is inaccessible at present. Would the Parliamentary Secretary contact the Meath County Council on this matter?

The Board of Works did not erect this wall.

Yes, they did.

No, we did not.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary be in a position to say if, in fact, an inspector from his Department has visited this place or is he relying for information on some junior official?

We are very conversant with the position there. The wall is an old Admiralty structure and we are under a legal obligation to protect it under the terms of our lease. We do not want to protect it at all.

The same as Nelson's Pillar.

Will the Board of Works maintain the path down to the back strand as well?
