Vol. 196 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Five-day Week.

6.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Finance whether in view of the general trend in industry and local authority employment and in the interests of efficiency he will consider introducing a five-day week for the Civil Service.

I doubt if it will be practicable to introduce a five-day week for the Civil Service generally as long as demand exists for service on six days a week. A claim for a five-day week has, however, been received from the Civil Service General Council Staff Panel for discussion by the Civil Service General Council. The representations of the Staff Panel will be carefully considered in the light of all relevant factors.

Would the Minister not agree that the effect of a five-day week in well run industries is a convincing argument for justifying its introduction in the Civil Service?

The Deputy will understand that the Civil Service is not an industry. It is a service for the assistance of the population.
