Vol. 196 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Galway Congestion.

38.

asked the Minister for Lands what programme is envisaged by the Land Commission for the acquisition and division of land, and the migration of suitable tenants to relieve congestion, in the constituency of East Galway for the year ending 31st March 1963.

As the land settlement programme each year necessarily depends on a variety of circumstances including such factors as the duration of acquisition proceedings, delays in getting possession of acquired lands, co-operation by tenants in migration and rearrangement proposals, etc., it is virtually impossible to forecast the outcome of any particular year.

Land Commission activities are not planned in relation to constituency areas. For County Galway as a whole, however, as far as can be visualised at this early stage, it is anticipated that land settlement in the current year will be approximately at the same level as last year, provisional returns for which are as follows:

An aggregate area of 4,300 acres was taken over for division while a total area of about 7,300 acres was distributed in some 400 allotments, including the migration of nine tenants and the rearrangement of upwards of 180 intermixed holdings. Expenditure on estate improvements amounted to approximately £110,000.
